How to Remove a Tree Stump in MA & NH
Grinding, chemical rotting, or digging it out — every method works, but they're not equal on cost, time, or effort. Here's how each one really works, what it costs, and when it's smarter to let a pro grind it out in an hour.
Left in the ground, a stump is a tripping hazard, a magnet for termites and carpenter ants, and a spot where suckers keep sprouting. There are three real ways to get rid of one: grind it, rot it with chemicals or natural agents, or dig it out. This guide walks through each, side by side, so you can pick the right one — or decide it's a job worth handing off.
The Three Ways to Remove a Stump
- Stump grinding — a machine shreds the wood 6–12 inches below grade in one to two hours. Fastest and most common.
- Chemical / natural rotting — drill holes, add potassium nitrate or Epsom salt, and let the wood soften over weeks to months.
- Physical removal — dig out the whole root ball by hand or machine. Thorough, but heavy work and leaves a crater.
Grinding vs. Chemical vs. Natural
| Method | Time | Effort | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grinding | 1–2 hours | Low (pro or rental) | Fast results, replanting grass, minimal yard damage |
| Chemical (potassium nitrate) | 4–6 weeks | Low–medium | No machinery; patient DIY on older stumps |
| Natural (Epsom salt) | 6–12 months | Low, but slow | Chemical-free, no rush |
| Digging it out | Hours–a day | High | Small stumps, or when the whole root ball must go |
Method 1 — Stump grinding
A motorized cutting wheel chews the stump and surface roots into mulch, 6–12 inches below the soil line. It takes one to two hours, leaves the surrounding lawn intact, and lets you replant or lay sod right away. It's the go-to when you want it gone fast without a crater. For the full breakdown, see our stump grinding service and our stump grinding cost guide.
Method 2 — Chemical rotting (potassium nitrate)
Potassium nitrate feeds the fungi and bacteria that break wood down. Drill 1-inch vertical holes across the top and angled holes into the sides near the base, pour in hot water and granular remover, then cover to hold moisture. In 4–6 weeks (longer for big hardwoods) the wood turns spongy enough to break apart. Our deep-dives cover the specifics: drilling holes in tree stumps, saltpeter for stump removal, and stump removal chemicals.
Method 3 — Natural rotting (Epsom salt)
The chemical-free route: fill drilled holes with Epsom salt, moisten, and cover with a dark tarp to block light and oxygen. The high salinity dries out the living tissue over 6–12 months until the stump is brittle. High-nitrogen fertilizer (urea) works on a similar timeline. See natural stump dissolver for the full method.
Method 4 — Digging it out
Best for small stumps under about 12 inches. Expose the lateral roots with a mattock, cut them with a saw or axe, chop the taproot, and lever the stump out with a pry bar. It's thorough but hard labor and leaves a hole to backfill.
What Stump Removal Costs
Grinding is billed mostly by stump diameter. These are published industry averages to set expectations:

Grinding vs. Full Removal — Which Do You Need?
Grind it if…
You want to plant grass or a garden over the spot, need a fast, budget-friendly fix, and want the lawn left undisturbed.
Fully remove it if…
You're building a patio, deck, or foundation over the exact spot, or replanting a large tree in the same hole.
Don't leave it if…
It's near the house — decaying wood draws termites, carpenter ants, and beetles that can reach your foundation.
Doing It Yourself? Drill the Right Holes
Every DIY chemical and burning method depends on deep holes. Use a high-torque drill with a 12–24 inch wood auger or ship auger bit (1-inch is standard) — its spiral flutes clear wet chips so it doesn't bog down. Drill in low gear for maximum torque, pull the bit out every few inches to clear sawdust, and brace the drill so a catching bit can't twist your wrist. A spade bit is fine for shallow chemical holes but struggles with depth.
When to Call a Pro
Large stumps, hardwoods, anything near the house, fences, or utility lines, and burning methods — which many MA and NH towns restrict or ban outright — are where a professional is the safe call. A licensed crew grinds the stump out completely in about an hour, with no fire risk, no months of waiting, and no crater. If you'd rather skip the drilling and the wait, we handle it start to finish — see stump grinding and tree removal.
