Professional Stump Grinding for MA & NH Property Owners

If you're looking to remove unsightly tree stumps safely and efficiently in Massachusetts or New Hampshire, AA Tree Service is ready to help. Using advanced equipment and proven techniques, we grind stumps well below ground level — helping prevent regrowth, reducing tripping hazards, and making room for whatever you want to do with the space next.

Why homeowners grind stumps

  • Enhanced curb appeal — a clean, level surface looks far better than a decaying stump, especially with fresh landscaping.
  • Increased safety — grinding below grade removes trip hazards and protects mowers and other equipment.
  • Pest & disease prevention — decaying stumps attract insects and fungi; removing them helps keep your yard healthy.
  • Reclaimed space — free up room for new trees, garden beds, or lawn.
  • Cost-effective — grinding is typically faster and less invasive than full stump removal.

Our Stump Grinding Process

Our approach is thorough, tidy, and built to leave the surrounding lawn undisturbed.

1. Inspection & Assessment

We evaluate the size, depth, and location of the stump to determine the best approach and the right equipment.

2. Site Preparation

We clear away debris and protect the surrounding area before any grinding begins.

3. Grinding Below Grade

Specialized machinery grinds the stump below ground level, reducing it to small wood chips.

4. Cleanup & Backfill

We fill the hole with mulch or topsoil so you can replant grass or flowers, then tidy the worksite.

Stump Grinding vs. Full Removal

The two aren't the same job. Grinding uses a machine to shred the visible stump and surface roots to several inches below grade, leaving the deeper roots to rot naturally. It's usually done in about 1–2 hours and leaves your lawn and landscaping mostly undisturbed — ideal when you want to plant grass, add a flower bed, or simply be rid of the eyesore.

Full removal extracts the entire stump and main root ball with heavy excavation. It leaves a large hole that needs backfilling and time to settle, but it's the right choice when you're pouring concrete, running pipe, building a structure, or planting a new tree in the exact same spot.

What Affects Stump Grinding Cost

Every stump is priced a little differently. These are the factors that move the number:

  • Stump diameter — measured across the base at ground level; bigger stumps take longer.
  • Wood hardness — hardwoods like oak and maple grind slower than softwoods.
  • Accessibility — slopes, rocky soil, or tight gate access affect the equipment needed.
  • Number of stumps — several in one visit lowers the per-stump cost.
  • Debris & backfill — whether you want chips hauled away or the hole filled.
  • Grinding depth — standard is about 4–6 inches below grade for replanting grass.

We quote each stump on site rather than guess. For general context, see our stump grinding cost guide, then request a free estimate.

Stump Grinding — Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to grind or remove a stump?
Stump grinding is significantly cheaper than complete removal. Grinding reduces the wood to chips below grade and leaves the root system to decay naturally, which takes less equipment and labor. Complete removal involves digging out the entire root ball and hauling away the mass, which is far more intensive. Unless you're building or replanting in the exact spot, grinding is almost always the more economical choice. See our stump grinding cost guide for context, then request a free estimate for your stump.
Will stump grinding remove the tree's roots?
No — grinding targets the main stump base and surface roots down to roughly 4–12 inches below the surface, allowing the remaining underground roots to decompose naturally over time. If you need roots entirely cleared for deep construction, trenching, or a concrete foundation, full stump and root removal is required instead.
Will a tree grow back after the stump is ground?
Usually no. Because the grinder shreds the main trunk crown and heartwood well below grade, the tissue responsible for new vertical growth is destroyed. Certain aggressive species with large root systems can occasionally send up small sucker shoots from deep residual roots, but these are easily managed and don't regrow into a tree.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard grinding depth is about 4 to 6 inches below ground level, which provides enough room to cover the area with topsoil and lay down new grass seed or sod. If you're planning something more involved for the space — like a new planting bed — we can grind deeper as needed and discuss it during the estimate.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding produces a pile of wood chips and shavings. We can use them to backfill the hole along with topsoil so the area is ready to replant, or haul them away entirely if you'd prefer a clean finish. Some homeowners keep the chips to use as mulch elsewhere in the yard. Just tell us your preference at the estimate.
What is the best time of year to grind a stump?
Late fall, winter, and early spring are ideal. During the cooler months, vegetation growth slows and surrounding plants are dormant, which minimizes impact on your lawn and landscaping. Scheduling is often more flexible outside the peak spring and summer season, too — though stump grinding can be done year-round in most conditions.
